IHSP - DAILY BREAD FOOD PANTRY
Thirty-two years later, after a small food distribution program started at St. Mary’s Church, the IHSP Daily Bread Food Pantry provides more than 225 families/individuals with food and personal care items on a monthly basis. Today we continue to focus on meeting the needs of food insecure families/individuals and supplementing their dietary needs with nutritious, healthy foods.
We are a CLIENT CHOICE Food Pantry (BYOB - PLEASE BRING YOUR OWN BAGS). Individuals visiting are assisted by a volunteer. Together they select the items needed for the family. This provides them with the opportunity to choose what they will eat instead of being provided with a predetermined bag of food items.
Resources come from food drives, individual donations, churches, businesses, service organizations and cash donations.
Food donations are always welcome. Items in high demand for selection by clients are: dry cereal, peanut butter, jelly, rice, canned or instant mashed potatoes, canned fruit, baked beans, vegetables, canned meats and tuna, soup, pasta and pasta sauce, crackers and juice. Personal care items such as shampoo, soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, toilet paper and deodorant are also needed.
Clients receive milk, dairy and vegetable or Farmer's Market coupons [in season]. They are distributed by family size. We are able to double Farmer’s Market Coupons with a grant from Putnam Bank.
The IHSP-Daily Bread Food Pantry is a member of Connecticut Food Bank and also receives and distributes government surplus staples to clients.
